Crimen (1934) is, probably-despite the fact that its structure fiercely rejects any classification-the first surrealist novel published in Spain. Praised by Azorín and Gómez de la Serna, Espinosa's work was silenced for political reasons and the few available copies were hidden or destroyed. After its rescue in 1974, its value has quietly increased until it became a secret classic of 20th century Spanish literature in its own right.
